Habits of Mind for Today's Educator

Weekly Wrap-Up

Habits of Mind for Today's Educator
Oh, the thinks you can think! -- Dr. Seuss

Let’s pat ourselves on the back for a great first week!

As we wrap up this first workweek of 2015, I would like to share with you a graphic provided to me by educatorstechnology.org. The graphic, created by Reid Wilson, +Reid Wilson @wayfaringpath, outlines 16 characteristics of the modern, progressive educator.

Consider the above qualities. How many of these characteristics do you already display? Have you held yourself to different or outdated standards? Is a re-thinking of your educational identity in order?

Use these qualities along with the questions and readings we have explored over the past few days to fine-tune your personal Teaching Philosophy over the weekend.

As a reminder, here is a checklist of the things we have accomplished to date:
  1. Completed the January Survey.
  2. Created a personal Teaching Philosophy.
  3. Explored my Teacher Tech and eLearning Pinterest board.
  4. Reminisced about past learning and teaching experiences.
  5. Asked ourselves 12 questions:
    • What were the perspectives of your past teachers?
    • Were your favorite teachers seasoned professionals or excited newbies?
    • What do you still hold onto concerning your past teachers?
    • Who do you model yourself after or aspire to imitate?
    • What motivates you to learn about the subject you teach?
    • What do you expect to be the outcomes of your teaching?
    • How do you know when you have taught successfully?
    • Why do you teach?
    • If you had to choose a metaphor for teaching/learning, what would it be?
    • How do your identity/background and your students’ identities/backgrounds affect teaching and learning in your classes?
    • How do you take into account differences in student learning styles in your teaching?
    • What is your approach to evaluating and assessing students?
  6. Read 6 helpful resources:
  7. Sourced 10 works you can find under the References tab.
Congratulations on a productive week!

Invite your friends and colleagues to join us and lend their voices to our survey. Follow me next week for our second Make-It Monday, as we begin development of our online resume and LinkedIn profile!

See you then,
